Optional excursion to Sintra

Join us for a half day excursion to Sintra, a fairytale-like town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the streets are lined with pastel colored houses and surrounded by lush hills that roll down to the Atlantic coast, the real highlight will be visiting the real life castles. Our English-speaking guide will intrduce us to the colorful Pena Palace, built in true Romanticism style, the ancient walls of Castelo dos Mouros, perched high above the city, and the Quinta da Regaleira estate, containing an extensive system of tunnels as well as its "Initiation Well" which houses a steep 27-meter staircase that leads directly underground and connects with the other tunnels. On the way back to Lisbon, we'll stop in Cascais for a tasty lunch.

Optional horseback ride on the beach

On our way from Lisbon to the Algarve coast you have an opportunity to join us for a horseback ride at Praia Melines! This ride will connect you with nature as you are guided across meadows, dunes and coastal forests. This tour is open to all skill levels and guides will ensure your safety throughout the tour. We will be riding Portuguese bread horses, called Lusitano and ride in English style.

Optional kayaking in Lagos

Discover the natural treasures of the coast of Lagos and embark on an unforgettable adventure. The 2-hour kayaking tour takes you to Ponta da Piedade where you enter caves and pass under natural bridges. Contact your tour director overseas for what to bring, exact time and meeting location.

Switch to a different mode of transportation today and join us an an all-day adventure through the Douro Valley vineyards. Our excursion starts in Vila Real and ends near Regua. We bike this beautiful route in a valley of one of the rivers that flow into the Douro. The landscape alternates between vineyards, olive groves, small forests and occasional villages. The route, mostly off-road, is easy terrain with some rocky parts..

Hotels

We stay in superior tourist class hotels, all with private bath/shower in 2-share rooms. Our hotels have been specially selected for their European atmosphere, friendly hospitality, and cleanliness. Our hotels are centrally located or within a short walk of public transportation to take you to the landmark of your choice in the city you are visiting. (Why stay in remote cabins, hostels, or share your room with up to 6 people, when you can stay in a centrally located hotel?)

You'll be given a complete hotel address list with your final documents. Properties are subject to change and any substitutions would be the equivalent of those listed. All land package rates are based on two people sharing a room. If traveling solo and not wanting to pay the single supplement, AESU will attempt to arrange a share with a same-gender travelers. If a share cannot be arranged a single supplement will apply.

The 4-star hotel Occidental Lisboa is located in central Lisbon, approx. ½ mile from the Avenida da Liberdade and near Marquês de Pombal Square. It features a lounge bar, a rooftop bar a restaurant and a 24-hour fitness center. Rooms are spacious and modern, equipped with free WiFi, telephone, flat-screen cable TV, mini-bar and a safety deposit box. Each room features a fully-equipped bathroom. The property is a 10-minute walk from the nearest metro station. A stop for the historic 24 tram is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

HOTEL VILA GALE LAGOS, Lagos

The 4-star hotel Vila Gale is a luxury resort located right on the Lagos seafront, along the sandy Meia Praia Beach and a 5-minute drive from Lagos Marina. It features a spa center, which includes a gym, a sauna, a steam bath and a massage room (available for a fee) as well as an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. Rooms are air-conditioned and feature modern audiovisual equipment.

GRANDE HOTEL DO PORTO, Porto

The Grande Hotel Porto is located in the city’s pedestrian zone and approximately 5 minutes (walk) from São Bento Train Station. It has a rooftop terrace and an à la carte restaurant serving Portuguese cuisine. Rooms are elegantely furnishes and feature a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a mini-bar and a private bathroom with a bath tub and shower. Grande Hotel do Porto is only steps from Bolhão Bus and Metro Station and 10 minutes from the Serra do Pilar Monastery by foot.

Airfare is not included in land price. If you choose to book air with AESU, after receipt of your land booking, AESU will email you a quote with your tour confirmation invoice. You will have 72 hours to accept or decline airfare. (Or call AESU at 800-638-7640 for a quote prior to booking).

Purchase your airfare from AESU and receive free arrival/departure transfers between the airport and your hotels. We also try to book you on the same flights as others traveling on your tour. Land only participants BOOKING OWN FLIGHT OVERSEAS, DO NOT receive airport arrival/departure transfers. If you book land only with us, book your flights from the USA one day earlier than the tour start date. If you are not booking flights through AESU, we recommend not booking airfare until your tour is guaranteed (This will be noted on website with “guaranteed departure” next to tour start date).

Full payment isn't due until 90 days before departure, and you or friends and family can make partial payments after you've booked (See NOTE below if within 90 days). Or you can scan/email or fax a booking form.

NOTE: Reservations to be paid in full 90 days prior to departure. Reservations received after this date are subject to availability and any airfare quote can only be held for 72 hours. Payment in full, for late bookings, will be due upon receipt of invoice from AESU. A late booking fee of $100 per person will apply.

Payment Plan

After paying a deposit of $500 online to reserve your spot, you can pay your balance in as many installments as you like, with a minimum of $100 for each transaction and no service fee. Please indicate booking number on your check payment. If you prefer to pay installments by credit card, please call us at 800-638-7640 for details. (All prices reflect a cash discount. There is a 4% processing fee for any payments made by credit card after initial deposit.) The total tour cost (land, and air if applicable) must be paid in full at least 90 days before departure.
